When Jeff's wedding picture went up on the wall above the fireplace he thought it was going to be around for a few years before another wedding came about. When he came over Sunday he had a surprise; it had been replaced. But, Jeff, the good news is, it's a different frame so your picture it still hanging around.

Shipping Season

Mom's favorite place to ride from home is to the Hueneme Pier; we have been making the trip a lot. One day, the first of last week, we saw this ship way out waiting to come in. As I zoomed in it looks like containers of bananas.

Then at the end of the week when we walked to the light house, this ship was unloading. (They are different if you look at the cranes and containers.)

This was two rows they stacked up at the pier.

Then today we saw this ship unloading; that's a whole lot of bananas. Joe, if you notice that front V-shaped structure, is mounted to the ship; that's one big plow.

Snow at the Beach

On Friday, the 6th, we rode our bikes to Oxnard Shores by 5th Street. The waves were fairly high and it was leaving this suds on the beach. Then the wind was blowing them across the sand, about as close to snow as we are going to see here. (It was cool to watch especialy cause I was in shirt sleeves and not a heavy coat.)

Trips to the Beach

With tempetures in the 80's for the first part of the week we made three trips to the Hueneme Pier. Our shadows on the pier.

Here I am at 6 months: just got done mowing the lawn and taking a little break.

At one year old, just before my first hair cut; it was a golden blonde color.

I'm almost two years old, heading out to help heard the cows.

I'm taking out the pig food at two and a half.

Cleaning out the sheep pen at almost five years old.

Here I am at seven. The truck in the background is the one I learned to drive in and had driven since I was 3.

Decorating the Tree

Decorating the tree was a little different this year; it seems the last couple of years I never get around to bringing the tree home 'til later in the month. By the time I get the stand on it and get it in the house it's pretty late in the month when we get it decorated By then Marie or some of the others are already home. But this year we got the tree Saturday morning; later that day I put the stand on and moved it. On.Sunday Jeff straightened it out and put the lights on with a few helpers and watchers.

Then others got involved with the ornaments,

and still others some got a kick out of the dates on some of the ornaments.

A Couple of Pictures to Share

So I have been off work the last couple of days due to a swollen knee. So Friday I transplanted all the little strawberry plants that I could and then gave the last of them away.

Then today mom went to Coach Pat's funeral and then to the temple. It was quite windy so no garage sales to hit here. I picked almost a dozen berries and tomatoes; not bad for the 3rd of December.

I took the dog for a walk and enjoyed seeing that the backstop was trying to do its job and stop the leaves.

So I took my old hand plow and sanded it down to get rid of all the rust.

Then gave it a new paint job and highlighted its features.

Trips to the beach

I was able to put a third bike together so on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday Marie, Mary and myself made trips to the beach. The weather was nice and the view was clear as you can see the Islands in the back.

We watched some sea lions play on the buoy.

The day after Thanksgiving I was going to put up the Christmas lights. It ended up that I had lots of help. It went a lot easier than the last few years besides being a lot earlier than the last few years.

Thanksgiving Dinner

Thursday Mom, Marie, and myself had dinner at Grandma Mike's house with Lloyd and his friend.
Lloyd said that was the first dinner he'd been to with the Becks that there was only three of them.
Then Saturday we had dinner at our house.

Thanksgiving Week

Well, I know you guys were expecting this to happen soon. Now it's official: I HAVE GONE INSANE. Mom and I made our Thaksgiving turkeys.

I had to have a two-sided turkey: a John Deere side and a regular side.
Mom was in book form:*my faith and the faith of those before me; *that my childern are wonderful people; *for my beautiful home that we can share; *for bike rides and walks with John (Not sure who that guy is.)
Dad's J.D. side: *heritage; *immediate and extended family; * spouse; *lifes lessons. Reg. side: *bike rides, *walks at park and beach; *garage sales, *antiquing and collecting.

So some of my thoughts and stories as Thanksgiving is coming: I always remember as the days approached that it was always good that most of the farmwork was done. You would always hope that the snow held off so that you could feed with the truck and not have to take the time to hook up the horses 'cause we could be home sooner to enjoy all the great aromas of cooking and vists of family.

So it's fun now to think I can just sit back and watch my strawberries grow.

Our last trip out

So this past Saturday I was off work so we hit the road, checked out some garage sales, then headed for Woodland Hills. We stopped in Calabasas and checked out the colorful trees (Yeah, they have colorful trees in California, too.)

Then we went to an Arts and Crafts fair in a park at Woodland Hills. We saw some awesome things and paintings; we then checked out the antique stores. We rode on their bike path for an hour, went to dinner and back home.( My bad; I didn't take pictures at the art fair or downtown; just Mom on the bike path.)

Another Saturday Adventure

On Saturday after a day of garage sales we went to the beach off 5th Street and parked and unloaded the bikes.

We rode to Channel Island Harbor and walked out to the end of the harbor.

Watched the sail boats as they were heading out; it was nice weather and a beautiful sight.

We got a big kick out of this lady pedaling by on her surf board with her dog (waiting to see Sid, Shaun or Bella on one)

Then we rode back, had lunch at Mrs. Olsen's and made it back to the truck where mom tried out our purchase at a garage sale for a dollar while I loaded the bikes. Then we went to Nik's game and took all out for ice cream and called it a day.

Saturday we were out doing our garage sale hunts. Mom was giving me directions to one in Spanish Hills when we came to an intersection and mom said 'It's over there where all the cars are parked." As we drove by looking for a place to park I started to say that's a Bently and another and another on and on. I said I couldn't believe these cars were here for a garage sale. We parked and got out to walk to the house and finnaly realized it was the wrong address.

Our Saturday

Saturday we hit a couple of garage sales then headed to Carpinteria to their big Flea Market. We saw a lot of neat things. Then took our bikes and rode around town and to the beach.

Rode to the seal sanctuary...very few seals

We went on down the beach and saw 4 dolphins going by.

Then rode down the trail along the tracks; we actualy missed the trail back to the main road and just kept going.

Then we exhausted ourselves by pushing our bikes up this steep trail and road a couple of miles back to town. It was a beautiful weekend and a lot of fun. We were surprised at the Carpeteria campgrounds how many campers had pumpkins and Halloween decorations . Afterwards we went to lunch and dessert in Ventura thanks to Joey and Sujin.

The Change

We have watched the neighbors all replace their water heaters and knew that it was going to happen sometime. Then mom told me it had started to leak out of the bottom so I hoped that it would be ok till I had a day off.

It lasted the next three days. Iif you look close the date is 1988...that's 23 years! That is pretty unheard of. I think it's a blessing that it has lasted our family that long.

So after a few hours here is our new water heater.

Last week when I was watering this hummingbird just came and kind of hung out for quite a while, which is real unusual.

So last year we had one bunch of grapes on the vines; they did not mature into anything though. This year we actually had three bunches. I still need to learn how to handle them cause they seemed small so I hadn't picked them and two of them shriveled up.

Our Weekend

So instead of getting a week off and going to Bear Lake, I got a three day weekend so we made a trip to Ojai. (Not as good but was a fun substitute) We checked into a Bed and Breakfast; it was called the Lavander Inn.

We walked around downtown and checked out the stores and shops;

sat around in the garden and rested.

Then Mom had read or heard about this bike bath that runs around town and all the way to the Ventura Pier.

So we spent a couple of hours riding around and trying it out.

And more riding.

Then we took a drive up the hill to the top of the valley; if you look you can find four different levels of the same road.

Then we stopped by the Ventura Pier. (No, we hauled the bikes; we did not ride the whole 15 miles.)

Check out these stacked rocks; was kind of interesting.

And last but not least, we watched the wind surfers. It was a grear weekend; don't think I have ever ridden a bike that much.

Oh, yes! We found out that Peyton has arrived to join our family!! Yeah!

Day Off

So I finally had a day off. Jeff and Kylie came by and we all went to the beach. Nik wanted to take the shovel (Not sure why; he never touched it.) but my old farm days kicked in and I dug a post hole. The kids after awhile tried it out.

Then Jeff dug a couple more.

I dug some more, even dug between them so they could go in one hole and out a different one. Even made one Tori's size. Some of the group even enjoyed watching the waves. At the end we had a hole for each kid and as soon as we could get them all in, the adults went home.

Our New Roof

So this week we had a couple of guys totally strip three layers of shigles off the roof and then put on all new shingles. This is the bare roof.

Here's the new one. We'll spare you the mess in between. (Still think we should have done it as a family but mom didn't want me on the roof.) It looks great and was the best choice.

It was surprising to see that 6 weeks have past since the last post, but here's a little catch up of those weeks. I transformed my new toy to a new coller
There was Jeff's and Kylles wedding and reception that all the family was here except for Sujn which we missed a lot, but was nice to have everyone else here for a while. I know not the best picture sorry.

Michael's blessing, then a fast trip to Utah for a second reception, where we were able to visit with some old friends and meet Kylie's family.

Then some of us stayed in Logan ( done a drive thru at Wendy's for late night treat then attended the Beck reunion.

Then found that our old computer died so we got a new one and finally got set up. It has been a very busy and fast 6 weeks but was so good to see and visit with everyone.

Friday I went to an estate sale while Mom was at school. I saw this windmill in the back yard; it was not priced so it looked as if they were not selling it. I went and asked anyway and after some negotiation and Mom's approval after school, (probably would have got it even if she didn't approve ) it went from their backyard to our front yard. (No more kids to embarass with what I put out front or plant any more.)

So my fame to life started 5/27/89 shortly after midnight. My dad and 4 brothers were gone for an overnight campout. So my Grandpa got to witness his first birth. I weighed in heavier than any of my siblings (which Jason was always mad about). Here I am with my Grandpa a few months later.

California Strawberry Festival

Today started the annual Strawberry Festival so I decided to decorate the front yard a little different in honor of the occasion.

Well, early Friday we got every last thing (except Makota) out of the the house.

It all got stored on the patio. (Thank goodness we put the new roof on.)

And in the garage. (Mom liked the family picture proped up on the big pile)

and carpet showed up; installation started about 8 am.

Then came everyone's help with clean up.

THEN CAME THE MOVING EVERYTHING BACK

It will probably take a few weeks (or months ) till everything is found and returned to the right spot in the house or on the wall. Many thanks to Kylie, Jeff and Mom or it wouldn't have happened.

The ENGAGEMENT Dinner

The Huffs were in town for the week so we had an engagement dinner for Jeff and Kylie. Kylie's mom, Jane, dad, Brian, sister, Sophie, sister Candance and her boyfriend, Joshua, Gramma, Joe and Sujin came over on Sunday. It was a great evening; thanks to all that came and again CONGRATS to Kylie and Jeff.

On February the 2nd early in the morning a sweet spirit was born into a new family. Many of you know her today as Melissa Basua but thought we would share a few shots of how that spirit grew to be that sweet young woman and mother. HAPPY BIRTHDAY sweetie.

So we were out doing our Saturday garage sales and it got pretty warm so we headed to the beach. This is the machine that is dredging Channel Islands Harbor. On the front under the boom there is a big auger that digs up the sand in the bottom of the harbor; then it is pumped thru the boat and into a 2 foot diameter pipe.

Then it comes up and across the Silver Strand Beach

So we set out to follow it

Actually last week we followed it and it went all the way to Hueneme Beach; this was the discharge there

This is all the new clean sand extending the beach by the Point Hueneme Light House.

We went to Carpeteria to see the seals; it was windy and cool but still we were able to see some seals.

Then we went to Buena High School and watched Michelle play water polo.

Michelle is number 6 on the alumni team. The alumni won easily.

My first day Home,it had snowed the day before I was born ed but it was gone by the time I came home.

Jumped ahead with the last biog so needed to catch up, we had Jason, Jaime and Bella by for a visit.

Trying to teach Bella to run with the bike (I think she wanted to make sure Jason had money if they seen the ice cream man before they left)

So I finally had a day off and visitors so I put them to work,we dug potatoes.

picked nine heads of cabbage.

picked cucumbers, beans, strawberry's zucchini and onions.

Then had to feed the crew, they cooked hot dogs on a stick we had cucumbers,chips and little smokies.

then they made Somores.

The Visit

So Marie showed up for a short visit; it was good to see her and vist for awhile.

So she was able to have dutch oven chicken with us on Sunday; afterwards she cooked marshmallows.

Then enjoyed some somores.

I think she was able to get some strawberries.

But the bad news is she left just before we got our first cucumbers. (It was GREAT to have you home)

Memories of the 4th

As a kid I always remember that the Fourth of July was always a little special. Yes, we still had things to do but we always took time to put out Old Glory; my parents told me that it stood for freedom and for those that gave their lives so that we could enjoy that freedom. I never had anyone close that served in a war but I had some cousins that gave their lives. For them and others that served, I'm grateful. I always enjoyed traditional chuck wagon breakfast into Paris, then usually back to hauling hay. After evening chores we would go watch fireworks. But today as I came home from work it hurt to see that we had the only flag on the block. I hope that you all took time to fly Old Glory and think about what it stands for. HAPPY 4TH OF JULY. Considering that tomorrow is the Fourth, hopefully we'll see more flags

Well, I came home today and discovered that the first bean stalk had reached the top of my frame at 68 inchs and still growing.

And there will be two more by tomorrow or so. So whoever guessed the 5th, got it.

Another one of my crazy ideas

So I had this idea to make my own fire pit that would work in a couple different ways on the back patio. Joe got me an old semi wheel; I got the rust off, then painted it and built the box to hold it. There are bricks in the box to keep the heat off the wood.

Works well to cook with the dutch oven. (We had one Sunday.)

Then I got some rods from Home Depot and a couple of limbs from the area behind Oxnard College and built these.

They work well with the pit for making Somores!!!

New Treasures

Last month, while we were at the Tractor Show, we picked up a couple new treasures: 2 crocks, a butter churn, a wooden tape measure,a wooden barrel and a hand pump.

So the girls had to give it a try while they were here; never did get the bucket full!!

The Hunt

Over the past three weeks we've had a few different people after my strawberries; first there was Marie, then the following week there was Jaime when she and Jason were here. (My bad, I didn't get a picture of them.) Then this week there was Ammon and Britain; they even were able to find some blackberries.

Then they moved to the strawberries in the backyard.

Then the front yard.

But the best part is, I believe, was that everyone enjoyed the berries, whether they ate them straight from the plant, or washed, in strawberry shortcake, dipped in sour cream and then brown sugar, or dipped in chocolate. (It was good to have the visitors.)

So last year we planted some fruit trees. In Dec. when the kids were here we picked the first grapefruit.

And eat it. (Umm good!)

Later we picked five more and enjoyed. (That was only $4.00 a grapefruit.)

Then on April first we enjoyed the first sweet Pixie Mandarin.

With two more to yet enjoy (that's about $6.50 each); was good to enjoy the fresh fruit.

The Latest Addition

When we lived in Idaho there was a flower that always grew by the picket fence that Mom liked; it was a columbine.

So for the first time I saw them at H.D. so I got a couple and put them in front of the door; will see how they do.

Our latest adventure

Last June we heard about this Antique Tractor Show so we made the effort to save the weekend. We went up Friday after work to be there on Saturday. (Needless to say, it was a great day!)

This is a Model B John Deere from around 1947. I grew up with one just like it; we always used it to mow hay and other light work.

All day this old Case Steam Engine was driven around blowing its whistle; it sounded like a train was coming. Here they were hooking it up to a belt to drive another machine,like a harvester. That's what they originally used them for.
